I just finished reading My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell. This book is about a fifteen year old girl who goes to a boarding school and is groomed into a relationship with a teacher. The story follows two timelines, one in the past, where you see her as a kid being drawn in slowly by the actions of her teacher, and then the present day, where you see her as a thirty-two year-old woman being forced to come to grips with her past. Was the relationship as she had made it out to be, or was there something else buried underneath that she needs to grapple with? This is a highly psychological novel, and it explores the mentality of victims of SA, especially ones who were groomed from a young age. I think I can provide a different perspective from some of the reviews that I have seen, because I have not read the book that this one is consistently compared to: Lolita by Vladimir Nabikov. This Day All Gods Die: Book Review and Discussion I just finished reading This Day All Gods Die, which is the fifth and final entry in Stephen R. Donaldson's The Gap Cycle. Finally, we have reached the climax of the series and get to see the resolution of the plotlines that have been built up from the beginning of the story. Things have escalated in terms of scale and tension to a stunning degree, especially in relation to the isolated, but interesting, first entry of the series. So, what did I think of it, and the series as a whole? Let's get started. “That which exists without my knowledge exists without my consent.” I finished reading Blood Meridian, by Cormac McCarthy a couple days ago. This is considered to be Cormac McCarthy's magnum opus, a novel set in the mid nineteenth century. It follows the historical Glanton gang that infamously traveled throughout the west scalping native Americans and committing other wanton atrocities. Like every McCarthy novel, it is extremely violent and nihilistic, and is well known for that fact. Overall, I cannot say that I enjoyed the book all that much. I do not regret reading it, but it was rather tough to get through, with the combination of prose style, lack of characterization, and non-existent plot. I had to get the audiobook about twenty or so percent through to help me push through; finding the willpower to push through was actually kind of difficult.
