Rage: Book Review

I just finished reading Rage, by Richard Bachman. This is an early novel by Stephen King, and it is undoubtedly one of his more controversial novels, even for King himself, as he has allowed it to fall out of print. According to wikipedia, five incidents involving students going to school with guns have been inspired by this book. People were not killed in every incident, but in some they were. The book was written in 1977, and the inspired shootings and attempts didn't start to happen until a decade later. All the same, there were five. As you can guess, the book is about Charlie Decker, a High School student who takes his class hostage with a gun, after killing his teacher. The novel explores his daddy issues, his problems with authority, and the general issues that teenagers face regarding sexuality in that time. Controversy On its face, the book comes off as remarkably poor taste to the average person (I guess?). I can only guess, because my second (unpublished) novel was also ...

The White-Luck Warrior: Book Review

I just finished reading The White-Luck Warrior, which is the fifth book in The Second Apocalypse series, and the second book in The Aspect-Emperor series. I definitely took my time with this one, and I don't think this trend is going to change any time soon. This book picks up right where the last one left off, continuing all of the storylines that were started in the last one: The march of the Great Ordeal north toward Golgotterath, the slog of slogs led by Achamian as he tries to discover the secrets of Kellhus and the Dûnyain, Esmenet and her trials as the remaining head of the Empire, and the other more peripheral storylines involving Psatma Nannaferi and the titular White-Luck Warrior. And every one of these storylines ends in a cliffhanger to be continued in the next story. This book is a major step up from the last one, with so much of the payoff from the last story coming on hard in this story. There are major battle sequences with the Great Ordeal throughout this entire st...

The Burning God: Book Review

I just finished reading The Burning God, by R.F. Kuang. This is the final book in the Poppy War trilogy, a grimdark fantasy series based on Chinese history. This book picks up right where the previous one left off. Yin Vaisra has made a deal with the Hesperians, and he is now the ruler of the Nikara Republic. Rin and Kitay are now in the South, taking part in the Southern rebellion against the Republic. This book details the next bloody chapter in Nikara history as Rin and her followers fight against an insurmountable enemy. Overall, I am not sure what to feel about this book. I did not hate the book by any stretch. At the same time, I continually come back to specific parts of the book that I thought could have been handled better. Overall (No Spoilers) My favorite part of this book was the beginning sequence of events. I thought it did a good job laying the groundwork for everything that was to come, especially the depiction of the fighting: namely, their brutality, how the killings ...
